A source close to All About Phones and close to HTC has indicated that HTC shortly with a ROM will come in which drivers sit on the hardware support.

Our source is one and the same as those of our Route 66 Mobile 8 scoop and money so as very reliable.According to the source will HTC at the end of this month with a ROM update, covering the drivers for the Qualcomm chips. He claims that the HTC license has surrendered to the Qualcomm MSM7200 and it finally can fully support. Through a ROM update the drivers will be installed and it needs the device works smoothly.

It is not yet known whether HTC also for the the other devices a ROM update will spend with the drivers.

HTC to release ROM update for HTC TyTN II with improved graphics drivers
May 07, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
When? Keep reading…
We know it from good source that this month, possibly already next week, HTC will release ROM update for HTC TyTN II that will ship with improved graphics drivers and will offer improved performance. It will be ROM update for HTC TyTN II but not for other versions (branding) of this phone like AT&T Tilt, etc.
We are not sure whether the issue with opening of the QWERTY-keyboard is resolved with this update however. This issue is annoying for some (not all!) users of HTC TyTN II, who wish to write quickly some text (like SMS, email, etc) but must wait several seconds until the orientation switches.
While it is true that we have not asked HTC about the need to release new graphics drivers for old phones, we have done it on purpose: not to spoil the party that HTC had due to the launch of their new breakthrough product (i.e. HTC Touch Diamond) but also because we knew the answer: “no comment”.
Note that apart from the imminent, graphic performance related, ROM upgrade for HTC TyTN II, HTC is not not (!) preparing in near future updates for any other phones that might have these graphic issues.

MSMobiles.com has got a pretty good reputation for being a credible source of information. I read a lot of people defending them in the forums. This would be awesome if it proves to be true. Even though the AT&T Tilt is not included with the ROM update, I would be willing to bet that it will be a matter of hours before it is cooked into a ROM that we all can use and flash to our devices. So hope continues for us. I’ll keep a watchful eye and keep everyone up to speed!

Ugh, a new ROM? So I’d have to reinstall everything again?

  2. JD says:

    No “official” Tilt ROM. Vacuums.

I wish they would do the drivers and the WM6.1 upgrade would be released to us at the same time…ya know…like now!

  3. Tireux de Roche says:

    No cooked ROM for me.

  4. James Schneider says:

Cooked ROMs are definitely a matter of opinion, and mine is that they blow the doors off of any “Official” ROM that is out there. I’m also in the mind set of I’ll believe it when I see it for this supposed new ROM with drivers. I’m an optimistic pessimist.

And Doug this isn’t another one of your April Fool’s jokes is it? A little late now isn’t it?? :-)

  6. Proto732 says:

If drivers could be extracted from the ROM and applied to the different TytnII flavors rather than cooked into a new ROM, that would be best.

I experimented with the ROMs in the past on my Apache they are a double edged sword. You might get better performance, more storage, … but there is always that hint of danger. For example one of the ROMs I used on the Apache had an issue with a piece of software the official ROM worked fine with. This conflict would randomly cause the device to lockup on boot. The only fix was a hard reset. Until I figured out the conflict it was a complete gamble if I did a soft reset.

And reading thru some of the TILT ROM threads I see the same thing with many of the cooked versions… “10 times more storage, but MMS, Voice Command and Direct Push don’t work”

I’d rather stick with a stock ROM for now. I know everything on it works, I’ve got 6gigs of storage on a MicroSD, and I’ve applied all the normal reg speed tweaks. I doubt I would have much to gain at this point from a cooked version.

So some sort of externally installable drivers would be awesome … but more than likely it NEEDS to be in ROM for some reason or another.

    Fingers crossed.

@j: If I had a nickel for everytime I had to reinstall because I flashed a ROM. It’s no big deal, after a few times you get used to it and get a routine down. I have all my cabs re-labeled so I can install them quickly.

@James: You must be releated to my wife, she never forgets anything either!!!! LOL YOU’RE KILLIN ME!!!! :)

@proto732: Try Dutty’s ROMS, I have never had a bad experieince with any of them. They are really quick. I missed the cube in is last ROM, but I have been using Shell lately so it is no big deal. I am with James though, I will believe it when I see it. However, msmobiles is supposed to be really reliable so I am keeping a glimmer of hope.

Gotta go draw a winner to the Ilium Contest!!! CYA!

I’ve been running cooked ROMs for a long time now and, while some do have problems, the vast majority are based on stock roms and work just fine. As for the drivers getting cooked into a ROM once released, I’d be surprised if they didn’t hit xda-dev before they were ever officially released.

    If they get released.
